Visiting Nusa Penida: The Best Travel Guide

Only open to tourism since around 2013 Nusa Penida is quickly gaining popularity and becoming a hotspot destination when visiting Bali. A serene, tranquil hotspot that is. If you are looking for nightlife or a place to turn up you will be disappointed. However this marvelous island is full of things to do and memories to make. Its gorgeous cliffsides, clear blue waters, epic beaches and awesome places to dive and snorkel are just some of the things to look forward to, to name a few.

If you think Bali is the ultimate island life it is nothing compared to visiting Nusa Penida, an island that goes at its own pace with magnificent natural beauty at every turn and an unexplainable quiet that isn’t found anywhere else. The travelers you come across on Nusa Penida are generally not there for luxury resorts or amazing restaurants but to discover a less explored land as it is, before becoming overdeveloped and saturated with tourism and modern modifications. The peace you feel here and from the locals is unmatched and adds to the beauty of this island.

The History

A little background before we get into the best guide for Visiting Nusa Penida. Nusa literally means island, and Penida means priest. Locals believe the island is cursed with dark spirits that were banished to the island by priests back in the day. However negative or dark that may sound, the Balinese believe in a universal balance of good and bad, which both are necessary. With that being said, Nusa Penida is still an important religious destination and in this Nusa Penida Travel Guide you will find out why. Like most of Bali, the main religion is Hindu. Traditional ceremonies are performed throughout the island and at ancient temples full of historical heritage. Also check out my post on “Everything you want to know before you go to Bali”

How Many Days To Stay

How long you spend in Nusa Penida is purely up to you, how you like spending your time, and the pace you want to go at.

I recommend 2-3 days which gives you enough time for relaxation and unforgettable adventures.

However, a day trip is possible and totally doable. A day trip will still allow you to see some of the main highlights and pick up on the peacefulness and tranquility of the island. Leave in the morning and get back to catch the sunset in Bali. I spent 2 days there but looking back now, having the 3rd day to further explore would have been icing on the cake.

Getting To & From

I traveled solo in January 2023, and getting to Nusa Penida was easy. There are three ways to get to and from the island.

  1. Speedboat from Sanur Beach
  2. Speed Boat from Tanjong Benoa
  3. Public Ferry from Padang Bai

The best and quickest option is taking a speedboat from Sanur Beach. You can buy a ticket from one of the many stands at the beach or book ahead of time. I pre-booked with Viator, and the process was seamless. I am a planner, and if you want to know how to plan for the perfect trip, you must read my other posts.

Back to Nusa Penida, though, no one tells you; I can’t tell you how many blogs I read or how much research I did, and not one article warned me that your leisurely stroll onto the speedboat from the port in Sanur will be followed by a less than leisurely climb out of the boat into the water and sand with your suitcase above your head. Pack light.

Thankfully I was wearing shorts and sandals that day, but I was completely mind blown as we approached the shore, and no dock or port was in sight. Apparently, it is still being built!!! The boats coast into “stalls” created by ropes. Yes, ropes. It was insane. Definitely looked unsafe, and it was a little wilder of an adventure than I thought I was getting into. Still, it makes for a great story and a unique experience to look back on with fondness and a little giggle now. Truth be told, I would do it again, although the dock is probably built now!

Insider Tip

If sunsets are your thing, make sure that you stay or are on the right side of the island to catch it! I was so excited to check out a spot I heard about with all the vibes. I figured I would watch the sunset with yummy food and a drink but no sunset was to be found!! I was on the wrong side of the island! Luckily the vibes at Penida Colada aren’t lacking and I highly recommend it for good food and live music just not sunsets!! This was a fail for me one night while there, but I made up for it the next day. Sunsets on the Indian Ocean are like no other sunsets I have seen before.

Also, Nusa Penida is a small island but are spread out, and the road conditions are less than an easy drive, making it longer to get from point A to point B. Think of very narrow, unpaved, and bumpy roads. It’s like a roller coaster because you’re hanging on for dear life and playing chicken with oncoming traffic. All part of the adventure, though.

Where to Stay?

As I mentioned, the island has drawbacks, such as a lack of infrastructure and environmental degradation. Still, they are offset by its unique charms and offer a traditional Balinese experience different from what you find in Bali. Accommodations are mostly 1-3 star properties, so don’t expect to be blown away, but they are all acceptable, super cute, very affordable, and the hospitality is always top-notch. Finding a hotel was harder here. Not like Bali where there are tons of blogs on the best places to stay for any budget. It was a gamble booking my hotel. The majority of tourists stay on the Northeast side around ToyaPakeh, which is the most urbanized area. ToyaPakeh Harbour is near beaches and most other hotspots, such as Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach.

Sea La Vie Resort $$

Sea La Vie is the most luxurious place to stay on the island and yet still affordable in my opinion. This stunning property overlooks one of the main harbors, Toya Pakeh, Mount Agung, and has one-of-a-kind panoramic ocean views of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and Bali Island. All of the rooms have modern amenities and terrific views. Along with dining options on-site, there is also a good selection of walkable possibilities making this a great choice if you don’t have a motorbike.

The Mesare Eco Resort $$

Boho island chic vibes are all found at the Mesare. Less than 2 miles from the gorgeous Peguyangan Waterfall and just 4 miles from the Seganing Waterfall, this property is unique, complete with an onsite restaurant and yoga studio. Mesare’s bamboo interior, terraces, and jungle views from your room give you a traditional Balinese experience more inland and into the jungle than other resorts. There is also a large refreshing pool and loungers to relax in surrounded by jungle which is a great experience on its own.

Daphila Cottage $

A hidden gem in Penida. Located more inland The Daphila has beautiful bungalows with modern amenities, well-kept grounds, a gorgeous infinity pool with bean bag and net loungers above the jungle, and of course, a magnificent view of Mount Agung. The restaurant on site is small. However, it’s cozy and yummy, made-to-order food with ocean views. It is an excellent choice if you don’t feel like leaving the hotel.

Things to Do

Kelingking Beach

Kelingking is what skyrocketed Nusa Penida into tourism with its undeniable natural beauty and unique cliffside formation. Surrounded by turquoise waters is a secluded beach with soft white sand. Getting down to the beach is quite a trek down the cliffside with less than sturdy bamboo railings to hold on to dear life with. The railings are just for looks, and the walk down is about an hour with no shade. Go at your own risk! While I was there, I saw paramedics racing down to help someone. There are other amazing beaches in Penida, so checking out Kelingking from the top of the cliff is just as spectacular.

Broken Beach

5 minutes away from Angel’s Billabong is Broken Beach. It would actually take 5 minutes to get there if the road wasn’t broken also. My driver literally said it should be called Broken Road, not Broken Beach. The beach itself is gorgeous. It’s called Broken Beach because there is a massive hole in the middle of the rock formation, exposing the insanely clear blue waters on both sides. The tunnel-like hole allows the water to flow in, creating a natural pool and an epic Instagram pic!

Angel's Billabong

The most beautiful natural infinity pool is found at Angels Billabong. Nusa Penida is known for its unique rock formations. Still, Angels Billabong is one of the most beautiful on the island. Bring a change of clothes because you will definitely want to take a dip in this one-of-a-kind pool that is literally in the ocean. It is like nothing I have ever seen before. Hang out on the rocks, and take in the view and the serene sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks. I spent the most time on my private tour at this spot. It is so peaceful and unique. Make sure to add this to your list.

Crystal Bay

Catch a spectacular sunset at Crystal Bay Beach after a long day of adventures. To get to the beach itself, you venture through a Palm Tree paradise and come out to the private beach that makes up Crystal Bay. It is more than just a beach but a secluded paradise that reminds me of Hawaii with all the Palm Trees.

Goa Giri Putri Temple

If you have had enough of the ocean and cliffside views, there is one of the most unique temples on the island. It is the largest cave temple and can hold thousands of people for religious ceremonies. Before entering, you will be asked to wear a traditional sarong and be blessed. Then, to get inside, you slide through a tiny crack in a huge rock that leads you inside this enormous space filled with the aroma of pungent incense and offerings. Suppose you’re lucky enough to be there when a religious ceremony occurs. In that case, you will get a unique glimpse of the local traditions and customs that make Bali a spiritual destination.

Peguyangan Waterfall

shutterstock raw mal roams

A go-to for many tourists attracted by the infamous blue stairs and a small collection of waterfalls and natural pools. It even attracts locals for its exceptional beauty, views, and the Hindu temple at the bottom. However, it is an intense hike alongside a cliff. Going down takes about 30 mins, and coming back up is steep and strenuous. Bring water, a change of clothes, and the right shoes so you can take a dip in the water and not feel icky as you make your way back up. You got this!!

Snorkeling

Someone say water and fishies? I am packing my snorkel. I love the ocean and was so excited to visit Nusa Penida to snorkel its pristine waters. I swam with manta rays, and whale sharks and saw the cutest fish.

With the island’s location, and strong and nutrient-rich currents, it cultivates a diverse marine life and excellent coral reef conditions. The Nusa Islands (Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan & Nusa Penida) host these fantastic conditions. Manta Point, Crystal Bay, and Gamat Bay are popular snorkeling locations in Penida. Plenty of tour options include a snorkel, so don’t worry about packing one unless you’re crazy like me.

Seganing Waterfall

tripadvisor

Ready to switch it up and want a little adventure? Checking out the Seganing Waterfall will be the ticket. It’s all about the experience, not the destination, in this case. You are literally sandwiched between sheer cliffs and wooden sticks, acting as a fence as you descend to the bottom of the falls. It is kinda crazy and not for everyone.

There will be a little rock climbing in certain places and hiking through cliffside terrain. Unfortunately, there isn’t a more significant awe when you reach the falls. The stream is usually tiny and off the side of the mountain towards the sea. Occasionally there will be small pools to cool off in.

Overall, Nusa Penida was wonderful. My accommodations, the hospitality, and the private tour around the island met and exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this Island for couples or solo travelers.
