What a better way to get acquainted with Los Angeles than by hiking the numerous trails the City of Angels has to offer?! In this post, you’ll find everything from a hike to a secret Nazi hideaway, gorgeous views, waterfall hikes, and dog-friendly trails.
We all know that physical exercise is so crucial for us, so hiking is an excellent option for leading a healthier lifestyle, plus getting your endorphins going. However, we also know gym life can be dull and unexciting sometimes, so getting out into the wild is a nice switch-up.
Hiking is not only a head-to-toe full-body workout, but it also does several amazing things our bodies need. Along with being on your terms, hiking is known to lower cholesterol and blood sugar, improve balance, and strengthen muscles, bones, and heart health. It also decreases the risk of respiratory problems, plus connecting with nature is really good food for the soul. Some other benefits of hiking not to be overlooked are, in addition to a hopefully beautiful scenery, it’s a total mood booster and can help clear the mind.
Whether you’re a local Angeleno or just visiting for the weekend, getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city by hiking can be so therapeutic.
Choose your trail, and let’s get to stepping!

1.Runyon Canyon

Multiple trails for all levels

Nothing is more LA than hiking Runyon. Although truth be told, it can get a little crowded being in the heart of Hollywood with all the beautiful people and celebrities flocking there. It’s never so crowded that it’s uncomfortable though. The main trail is paved which does take away from the rustic feel of hiking and getting dirt under your shoes. But there are three routes to choose from, so you can opt-out of the paved path. This hike isn’t for you if you are looking for solitude and wilderness. You’re in Hollywood!

Most routes are suitable for all levels, and one of the best parts of Runyon is that you can bring your canine companion! There are even water spigots and bowls for the doggies and water fountains if you’re forgetful like me. But be warned…. there are NO bathrooms! There are however cute benches along the trail to rest and take it all in. Depending on the trail you choose, the longest is 3.5 miles, and that’s if you make the entire loop, which generally takes 2 hours moving at a comfortable pace. Crowds tend to die down on the way back. The Hiking Guy is super helpful for turn-by-turn directions and more juicy deets and a lot of photos.

Parking can also be tricky, but that’s expected in LA, so don’t let that scare you. It is worth the hype, Or at least the Instagram pic. You might even catch a celebrity sighting, just play it cool and don’t fan girl out! The views of Los Angeles are breathtaking from Runyon, giving it the first spot on my list of the 5 Best Hikes in LA. It also happens to be right in my backyard, so naturally a favorite of mine.

2. Murphy Ranch – The Nazi Compound in Rustic Canyon

3.1 mile loop

Dogs Friendly

I know! Not what you would have expected, right? Located in the Santa Monica Mountains in the Pacific Palisades is Murphy Ranch.

Allegedly an heiress in the 30s, known as Mrs. Murphy, was building a mansion in the seclusion of Los Angeles, also known as Rustic Canyon. However, many suggest a Pro-Nazi Organization was building a self-sufficient compound where they could ride out World War II until Hitler finally won. We all know how that turned out, though! The day after Pearl Harbor, the inhabitants were arrested, and the compound was seized. However, all these years later, many of the structures and artifacts from the original compound remain. There are also many other theories that are around about this crazy compound if you want to google for more juicy details.
Hiking back to Murphy Ranch is scenic but also a fascinating glimpse of “Hidden LA.” Most rated this as an easy hike and can take 1-2 hours, depending on your stride. Dogs are also allowed, making it a fun adventure for our four-legged friends. There is not much shade with the trail being on a fire road, so bringing sunscreen and or a hat is something to consider… I don’t recommend bringing kids because there are hazardous areas, as the ranch itself is not maintained, and some structures are falling apart. I came across California Curiosity and found some other fun facts and photos before my adventure to Mrs. Murphys!

3. Copper Canyon Falls

3.6 miles round trip (5.6 miles round-trip if campground closed)
Moderate
Dog Friendly

Located outside of the City and Los Angeles proper, Cooper Canyon Falls is one of the best hikes with gorgeous waterfalls and views. Don’t let the drive sway you. Being outside of the City, you are able to experience a totally different scenery. This moderately considered hike is located near Mount Wilson and is roughly a 6.2-mile loop. In some cases, shorter if the Buckhorn Campground is open. The World of Waterfalls is a great site, and I found it to be really helpful before beginning my own adventure to the falls.

One option is to park on the road and walk 1 mile through the campground to the Burkhart trailhead. If you want to cut out a little time, park inside the campground and make your way to the trail. The falls themselves are 40-50 feet, depending on the time of year you visit, with about a foot of water at the base.

Generally, mid to late Spring is a good time, with the falls roaring at their strongest. The end of this hike can get a little dicey with narrow trails, and although dogs are allowed, I would use caution bringing our furry friends or children. There is a rope that you can use for assistance getting down to the falls, as it can be rocky and steep. Also, I know we are supposed to be basking in mother nature on a hike but be sure to bring insect repellent, so you don’t get eaten up. There are tons of bugs on this trail, especially as we get closer to the water.

4.Paseo Miramar

5.5 Miles
Moderate
No Dogs Allowed

Paseo Miramar is completely opposite of Runyon! This is a California dream hike with a loop through the Santa Monica Mountains in Pacific Palisades. It has a locals only vibe with stunning ocean views and a booty burn to remember. The well-maintained fire roads make this almost 6-mile trek bearable; the seaside view doesn’t hurt either.

It should take you roughly around 2.5- 3 hours at a nice pace. The trail parking can be found on Los Liones Drive off of Sunset. The last section of the hike leads to the Parker Mesa Overlook, which is, without a doubt, the best view of the California coastline. There are plenty of options to extend the hike too. To keep exploring, the Topanga Canyon trails are just above the Parker Mesa Overlook that you can continue on.
If you have time, the iconic J. Paul Getty Villa is definitely worth a visit too. This elaborate Italian style Villa is viewable from the trail and makes a great addition to an already rewarding hiking trail. Admission is free, and there is a tasty cafe to refuel. Paseo is one of LA’s not to be missed hikes for sure. Go Hike it also has some great resources for this particular trail.

5. The Hollywood Sign

6.5 miles
Intermediate

Now, what type of blogger would I be writing about hikes in LA and not include the infamous Hollywood sign!! This is an absolute icon and not to be missed. Like Runyon, there are several different routes of what some consider an intermediate hike. The trail to the Hollywood Sign climbs close to a thousand feet so expect it to take around 3 hours to complete. Most trails to the Hollywood sign are limited with shade, so carry plenty of water. There are also the occasional wildlife sightings of mule deer, bobcats, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. Be aware of these if you plan to bring your dog.

Fun fact, in 1923, the Hollywood Sign was initially named Hollywoodland!
